Takoyaki is hot, fluffy balls made of savory pancake batter with tempura scraps, green onions, red ginger, and octopus. Takoyaki is often topped with sauce, mayo, seaweed flakes, and katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes).

There is a special distinct Takoyaki pan that is used when making Takoyaki. With this pan, the Takoyaki balls are evenly cooked into spheres. They are noted to be perfect when they are gold brown on the outside and slightly doughy (almost creamy) on the inside.

Takoyaki originated in Osaka and was created by Tomekichi Endo in 1953. It quickly spread in the Kansai area and other parts of Japan as a popular street snack. Now it can be found in other parts of the world as well.
