Okinawa is the most southern region in Japan. With heavy western influences, the culture and dialect spoken in Okinawa make it very unique from the rest of the country.
There are many distinct dishes in Okinawa that are extremely tasty. Here are some of the most popular food items:
1.Okinawa Soba: Thick wheat noodles in a clear broth of pork, bonito fish flakes and konbu (kelp), topped with spare ribs that have been slowly cooked and garnished with pickled ginger and scallions.
2. Goya Champuru: As signature dish in Okinawa. Champuru literally means something mixed and Goya is a green gourd with a distinctly bitter flavor, also know as bitter melon. Goya Champuru contains Goya tofu pork and eggs all mixed together. BEWARE: Goya to some, is extremely bitter!
3. Sata Andagi: Okinawan doughnuts. Sweet deep-fried dough covered in sugar. Sweet, warm, and fluffy!
4. Taco Rice: This one might seem bizarre as a Japanese dish, but it is very popular; especially among the U.S. military personnel stationed in Okinawa. Taco Rice consists of rice, ground beef flavored with taco seasoning, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and salsa.
5. Awamori: This one’s not food, but it is the unique alcoholic beverage created in Okinawa. It is made from Thai rice and is colorless. This drink packs a punch. It has a strong flavor and is usually served on the rocks.
